    Looking for love online has resulted in heartache and often financial ruin for a number of UAE residents who were burned while reaching out for human connection during the COVID-19 pandemic. In an article for the UAE’s Ministry of Interior magazine 999, I explain the rise of cybercrime cases that could be categorized as ‘romance scams’ is connected to the increase in social media use borne out of the isolation from lockdowns. In the first three quarters of 2020, almost half of all cyber crime cases registered with UAE Police were such types of crimes – with women the primary victims.

    In my column in The National newspaper, I respond to a reader who believes he or she has been the victim of a scam, after wiring an amount of money to a Dubai bank on the belief a large amount of inheritance would come as a result. I explain the UAE has several laws that prohibit internet fraud, including the Cybercrime Law, but evidence is required to establish the facts. I recommend visiting the Dubai Police Department of Electronic Crime so police can investigate. The punishment for such crimes includes imprisonments, fines and deportation.

I further discussed about the enforcement procedure of foreign Court order in UAE pursuant to article 235 of UAE Civil Procedure Code and the right of privacy/confidentiality that cannot be breached unless there is a Court order issued regarding the disclosure.
